We see a growing trend towards promoting upcycling at an individual level, but there is a lack of a comprehensive intervention framework that guides in looking at behaviour change promoting upcycling at an individual and systems level.

Introducing you to Upshift Deck

This toolkit acts as a catalyst, empowering individuals to scale up upcycling innovations by effectively addressing the behavioural systems involved.

Rooted in the COM-B Model and Behavior Change Wheel, this toolkit is not just a set of cards; it's a tailored journey through the intricacies of upcycling behavior change.

Based on COM-B behaviour model and the Behaviour Change Wheel

The COM-B model has been developed as part of a larger system of behaviour shown below called the behaviour change wheel (BCW) which is designed to help intervention designers move from a behavioural analysis of the problem to intervention design using the evidence base. The Behaviour Change Wheel (BCW) was developed from 19 frameworks of behaviour change identified in a systematic literature review.

What is it about?

Upshift Cards Deck serves as a comprehensive guide for designing and implementing interventions that target the behaviours of key stakeholders within the upcycling ecosystem.

It enables users to explore and evaluate various intervention strategies, emphasising the importance of adapting these strategies to the specific context of each upcycling ecosystem. This toolkit acts as a catalyst, empowering individuals to scale up upcycling innovations by effectively addressing the behavioural systems involved.

Where to use it?

This deck serves multiple roles:

  • A guide for researchers exploring upcycling practices, aiding in innovation identification, behavior understanding, and intervention design.

  • An essential resource for practitioners in upcycling initiatives, facilitating the creation of context-specific interventions tailored to their operational environment.

  • A strategic asset for policymakers, linking interventions to policy categories and aligning practical strategies with broader policy frameworks, contributing to the development of supportive policies for upcycling practices.

Whether the upcycling innovation is resource-led, process-led, or need-led, the toolkit provides guidance for promoting and scaling the idea.

The Deck is divided into the following:

Unpacking the Upshift Cards Deck

The toolkit follows a sequential flow, starting with identifying specific upcycling innovations and progressing to intervention design. It begins by establishing the type of upcycling innovation, laying the foundation for subsequent actions. The focus then shifts to pinpointing target behaviors among stakeholders, ensuring interventions align with the behaviors crucial for upcycling advancement.

Delving deeper, the toolkit maps components of capability, opportunity, and motivation, providing insights for effective intervention design. It links these components to the most effective intervention functions, allowing practitioners to select interventions aligning with identified COM-B components. Additionally, interventions are connected to behaviour change techniques and policy categories (if applicable), offering a broader context for implementation.

The Game

Players takes turn placing their villages on the board, which are surrounded by farms that earn them a living. Elephants can wander across the board, causing damage to the farm and village pieces if they are not deflected to their sanctuary's pieces using barrier tokens.

With every round, elephants are introduced to the board, and their movements are based on dice throws and card play. To protect their villages and adjacent farms, the players must use strategic barrier token placement or play specific cards. The player who plays the best villager and stays on the board the longest with their farms wins.

International Upcycling Festival 2024 Academic Conference

De Montfort University, UK | April 2024

I had the honor of presenting the research paper on the toolkit "Applying the COM-B behavior model and behavior change wheel to develop an intervention framework to promote upcycling" as a member of the International Upcycling Research Network at the International Upcycling Festival 2024, Academic Conference, held at De Montfort University.

Upshift Workshop

LCB Depot, Leicester, UK | April 2024

Upshift: Upcycling Intervention Design Workshop at LCB Depot (Leicester’s hub for creative people & businesses), offering participants a hands-on experience with the Upcycling Behavior Intervention Toolkit. It was incredible to witness the enthusiasm of practitioners, researchers, and community members as we explored new avenues for upcycling businesses.
